Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT)
The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) helps determine admissions for the specialized high schools in New York City: Bronx High School of Science; Brooklyn Latin School; Brooklyn Technical High School; High School of American Studies at Lehman College; High School for Math, Science, and Engineering at City College; Queens High School for the Sciences at York College; Staten Island Technical High School; and Stuyvesant High School. The SHSAT is a two-and-a-half hour, multiple-choice exam administered to New York City residents in autumn by the New York City Board of Education. The test consists of two sections, Verbal (45 multiple-choice questions) and Mathematics (50 multiple choice questions), with a total time limit of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The number of correct answers is converted into a scale score, an integer between 200 and 800. This determines a student’s relative standing compared to other students, indicating which candidates are best suited for which schools.
SHSAT Course
The SHSAT course at Accelerate Academy is offered during our Summer semester and for the first several weeks of our Fall semester. The Summer course is open to incoming 7th through 9th graders who are eligible to take the SHSAT exam. The intensive Fall course is open to only 8th and 9th graders who are scheduled to take the SHSAT exam the following October.
Our Summer SHSAT class meets Mondays through Fridays for the entirety of the semester. Instructors will teach the concepts covered on the exam and the strategies necessary to maximize scores. Class time generally consists of lecture, subject practice, and homework review. Three or four times during the semester, a full SHSAT diagnostic will be administered to evaluate the student’s performance and readiness for the exam. The intensive SHSAT course runs for the first six or seven weeks of the Fall semester depending on the test date. The class meets every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students will be given full SHSAT practice exams every class session and will spend the first three hours taking the test. The exams will be graded, and the rest of the remaining time will be allotted to going over the exam. This intensive course is designed to prepare students during the final weeks before the SHSAT exam is administered.
